The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is searching for a Technical Director, Food Systems to lead the design and implementation of the USAID Advancing Nutrition technical portfolio for food systems and nutrition, led by JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc. (JSI). This position is based in Arlington, Virginia.

GAIN is a Swiss-based foundation launched at the UN in 2002 to tackle the human suffering caused by malnutrition. Working with both governments and businesses, we aim to transform food systems so that they deliver more nutritious food for all people. In particular, we aim to make healthier food choices more desirable, more available, and more affordable. GAIN’s mission is to advance nutrition outcomes by improving consumption of nutritious and safe food for all people, especially those most vulnerable to malnutrition.

Working for GAIN and based with JSI, you will provide leadership, vision and direction to the USAID Advancing Nutrition technical portfolio for food systems and nutrition, encouraging planned collaboration across and among USAID bureaus, missions and offices to promote multi-sectoral nutrition investments world-wide. Specific responsibilities include; 

  • Close collaboration with other technical directors and senior staff to develop the project’s strategic direction to develop and implement core workplans, ensuring alignment with USAID priorities and global best practices.
  • Ensuring effective collaboration with the knowledge management team to write, edit, review, and disseminate technical content through strategic networks highlighting USAID Advancing Nutrition’s accomplishments.
  • Assigning and overseeing direct technical assistance to specific work orders, project countries and USAID Missions and their implementing partners, including planning and designing deliverables in collaboration with U.S. and field-based management teams.
  • Overseeing activity portfolio and budgets, collaborating with finance staff to monitor spending and ensure appropriate allocation of resources.

To be considered for this position you must have experience providing technical assistance to USAID programs and implementing policy agendas, advocacy, and developing strategic partnerships with public and private sector entities. You should possess strong communication skills and be able to facilitate and lead conversations that integrate technical expertise across the agriculture sector and market systems.
