About the Role

The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is seeking a Project Manager, Food Systems and Environment to provide functional, technical and managerial leadership to projects and teams in the Environment thematic area. This role is offered on fixed term contract of up to 3 years’, with extension subject to availability of funding. You will be based in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

GAIN is looking for a Project Manager, Environment in Bangladesh who can improve the environmental impacts of food systems i.e. how the value chains of foods can contribute to climate change or biodiversity loss through production, processing, packaging etc. and how food systems can be made more resilient to the effects of environmental degradation e.g. because of flooding or other extreme events by:

  • Leading the implementation of the environment workstream;
  • Developing and managing partnerships with the Government of the Bangladesh, local environment organisations, development partners, academia and privates sector having youth and women at the centre
  • Supporting the design, development, implementation and monitoring of new projects linking food systems, nutrition and environment; Provide strategic technical expertise locally.

This is an exciting opportunity to get involved in a new area of work for GAIN with an entrepreneurial or start-up mindset to take on the responsibility of building out the environment workstream and the new partnerships and skills in the organisation to make it happen.

Reporting to the Portfolio Lead, Large Scale Food Fortification and Value Chain you will provide functional, technical and managerial leadership to projects and teams in the Environment thematic area in close collaboration with Policy Lead, different projects and Programme Management Team.

The postholder is responsible for the overall environment project management leadership and ensure project activities are implemented within approved plans, budget, and quality standards. They also establish, manage and maintain relationships with relevant partners and stakeholders.

About You

The ideal candidate should have demonstrable experience and broad knowledge on the environmental impact, challenges and opportunities, specifically within food systems and/or nutrition within the Bangladesh context. You should have have previous experience and knowledge in food value chains and the effects of this in areas such as climate change, biodiversity loss and environmental degradation. 

You should have an in‐depth understanding of programme issues and policy, advocacy work at organizational, national and international levels and have substantial management experience in leading international/economic development projects in multi-cultural environments working with governments, private sector, civil society, and other partnerships. 

The postholder should have excellent command of written and spoken English and a strong ability to bring different stakeholders from different backgrounds together and broker new partnerships. You should have excellent communication skills, with the ability to present clear and structured arguments and strong stakeholder engagement abilities in motivating and mobilising individuals within or outside your reporting line.

You should have excellent analytical, strategic and technical competence in the areas of environment, climate change, food systems and nutrition or closely related domains. A Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Business Management, Agricultural Science or a related field is an added advantage. You should be highly flexible and willing to travel occasionally.

Key Responsibilities include
  • Designing, planning and overseeing the timely implementation of the NFP environment workstream in Bangladesh, following the GAIN Project Management Guidelines
  • Monitoring risks and develop contingency plans, escalate issues when appropriate to country and programme leadership and respond to emergencies accordingly as feasible based on prior approval.
  • Working with relevant environment, gender and safeguarding specialists of the government, civil society, academia and private sectors to ensure that they are integrated in project designs and implementation plans. 
  • Contributeing to wider policy and influencing agendas both within and external to GAIN
  • Building a network of relevant partners and experts in the environment field and engage them in GAIN’s current and future environment work
  • Working with international finance to ensure that accurate budgets and forecasting are drawn up for all activities, and that activities costs are kept within budgets.
  • Coordinating with the Operation Team on the procurement process by identifying, selecting and managing suppliers within ethical and procurement standards and guidelines.
  • Provideing technical guidance to support the development and implementation of programming which aims to achieve both nutrition and sustainability objectives

The starting salary on offer for this role is from BDT 2,394,972 – BDT 2,738,570 (gross) per annum depending on experience.
